From Canvas

Quizzes provide questions to students with certain limitations (e.g. time, date availability, password protection, etc).

Quizzes may contain a number of individual questions selected from a Question Bank, or can be set up to use Question Groups, which select a number of questions randomly from a pool of questions selected from the Question Bank.

Before you learn how to create quizzes and questions, let's explore how Question Banks and Question Groups work in greater detail.

Question Banks

The Question Bank in Canvas is a place where individual quiz questions reside. Quiz questions can be further organized into Question Banks to group questions that are similar in content or subject matter.

To create a Question Bank:

  1. Click on the Quizzes tab
  2. Click on the Manage Question Banks button located on the right hand side of the page. This will take you to a new page.
  3. Click on the Add Question Bank button from the right hand side of the page.
  4. Give the bank a name and press Enter

Question Groups

Question Groups are created within a quiz, and allow you to select a number of questions randomly from a larger subset of questions.

For instance, you may choose 5 questions as a Question Group from Question Bank(s), and set the Group to only select 3 of those questions for the quiz.

In Bb Vista, we used question sets in the question database, then added those sets to the quiz. In Canvas, we create Question Groups within the quiz itself, then add questions to those groups from the Question Bank.

Read on to learn how to add questions into Question Groups within a quiz.

Creating a Quiz

To create a quiz within your course:

  1. Click on the Quizzes button in the navigation bar.
  2. Click on the Create a New Quiz button, located on the right hand side of the page.

The Edit Quiz page will appear, where you can add quiz instructions that include text, image, audio/video, or links.

On the right hand side of the screen the Quiz Options will be shown. This is where the settings for the quiz are made, such as time limit, dates available, etc.

Adding Questions to a Quiz

From within a quiz, you can create a new question, create a new question group', or find existing questions from the Question Bank. Quizzes-add questions.jpg

  1. To find an existing question, click Find Questions. This opens a window that shows questions in Question Banks.
  2. Select one or more questions by checking the box next to each, or choosing Select All in a Question Bank.
  3. You can simply add the selected questions directly to the quiz, or insert them into a Question Group.
  4. If you don't already have a Question Group, you can create one from this window. Question Groups allow you to randomly select questions from the group for the quiz. Quizzes-question group.jpg
  5. Click Add Selected Questions to finish.

Scoring Quizzes

Canvas will automatically score certain question types, such as multiple choice, matching, true/false, and some short answer.

To score essay questions, or even to re-score quiz submissions in general, Canvas provides the Speed Grader. This makes it quick and easy to review and score quiz submissions.

Importing Quizzes

Canvas lets you import quizzes directly from major learning management systems, such as Blackboard Vista, or from a QTI package, which programs like Respondus can create.

See Importing Quizzes for full details.

Bringing Question Banks in from Publishers Materials

Yet to be explored, but in theory, if a publisher provides a quiz or question bank in QTI format, that should be easily digested by Canvas. If they don't, but they provide it in Blackboard/WebCT Vista or CE formats, you can upload it into a Bb Vista shell and import it in Canvas.

Known Issues

  • Editing a question from within a quiz dos not change the original question in the Question Bank, and vice versa.
  • Importing QTI format questions does not include images.
  • Importing QTI format questions may confuse question feedback.
  • Changing answer types can ditch your answers already in the question
  • Multiple fill in the blank questions have to have more than one answer or they will not work
  • While typing multiple drop down answers if you remove a variable, you will lose that answers variants
  • Questions must be removed from a quiz....one at a time.
